Dong Child in Sanjiang

Here you can see a picture of a Dong child taken in Sanjiang in Guangxi Province. We travelled by boat from Fulu up the river to get there. Then we visited the surrounding area where we found beautiful unspoilt Dong minority villages with their drum towers and wind and rain bridges.

Miao woman at Huangcaoba market 1993

We stayed overnight in Huangcaoba when we missed the bus to Jinping and the next morning there was a spectacular market in the village. People had arrived from surrounding villages on horseback to sell their wares and I took some photos. This is the best one I think.

Longsheng Terraces

The terraces at Longsheng north of Guilin were impressive. We crossed a precarious wooden bridge and climbed up a path to a village where the views were fantastic. There were women in traditional costumes trying to sell their handicrafts to the few Chinese tourists who went with us on the minibus to visit the area, but we didn't see any other Westerners. You can see a photo I took in 1993 here.

The Red Hat Yao of Jinping

The women of the red hat yao of Jinping in southern Yunnan Province shave their heads and wear a red hat on their heads when they are married. Prior to marriage they wear a kind of black wrap-around turban. I visited the area in 1993 and the terraces were impressive. One of the men had a gun which he fired into the ground as we left his village. That gave us a fright..

The Dong People in Guangxi Province

I visited the Dong minority area in 1993 including Fulu and Sanjiang and the nearby terraces at Longsheng north of Guilin. The area was beautiful and unspoilt with very few tourists and the people were very friendly. I remember showing some children my camera and letting them play with it. I don't think they had seen one before. We also recorded some children singing a song. Maybe I can find the tape somewhere and convert it to an Mp3 and put it up on this blog if I can work out how to do it. Here is a photo from the area of a wind and rain bridge.
